The Sustainable Darkroom and Luovake - an evening of experimental cinema  at Kino Aurora in Jyväskylä, Finland.

From recovered land developed in nettles to chemically-etched deserts, Blurred Ecologies is a collection of experimental moving image works that explore the entanglement of place, material, and memory. Through alternative photographic processes, nonhuman interventions, and animist perspectives - these films explore themes of industrial ruin, ecological renewal, and the re-enchantment of the Earth. Going beyond passive observation, each film is an exercise in collaboration with the more-than-human world, and a protest against the collapse of our global ecosystems.

ON HANNAH FIELDS   Lewis Heriz 2024
A portrait of recovery on an ancient patch of inner-city Derby, UK, adopted by an ex-psychiatric nurse recovering from burnout. Rendered in nettle-developed 16mm, chemigrams made with the community, and animation using water alone.

CHEMICAL AFFINITIES   Miguel Teodoro 2023
An inquiry into ammonia fertilisers in Alentejo region of southern Portugal, the film investigates the complex relationships between soil, fertility, energy, chemical industries, and image-making technologies - by contrasting high-res images with degraded Super 8 in ammonia.

GREEN LUNG   Simon Hamlyn 2024
A screen-printed animation combined with found materials, the film conjures ghosts of industrial labour within Britain’s first public park opened in 1840, once a gift to Derby’s mill workers.

LES RUINES DE CE RÊVE (THE RUINS OF THIS DREAM)   Cendre 2022
In the wake of industrial collapse, nonhuman forces reclaim the land — turning ruins into strange, emergent life. This work combines cyanotype with soil from a post-industrial slag heap to animate a now abandoned site of extraction.

SILBERSEE (THE SILVER LAKE)   Ivar Hagren & Weronika Bela 2024
A rumour of silver and toxicity haunts this investigation of a chemically contaminated East German reservoir nicknamed Silbersee (Silver Lake), near the Wolfen film factory. For years, photographic waste was discharged into the lake - so much so that one could develop photographs directly in its waters.

DAPHNE WAS A TORSO ENDING IN LEAVES   Catriona Gallagher 2024
A re-enchantment of the Daphne myth, told through bay-leaf-developed film, across the ruins and laurel-lined parks of Rome.

EARTH MY PERPLEXION   Sonya Petrenko 2021
Film matter is physically altered by microorganisms from natural environments such as mould, urine, saliva, and soil. Moving beyond anthropocentrism, the film is a reflection on coexistence with other beings through the medium of film.

THE FOURFOLD   Alisi Telengut 2020
Hand-animated with oil pastels and found objects, this work is narrated by the artist’s grandmother, and depicts Mongolian and Siberian animism as a guide through the climate criticism urging the need to recognise agency in the more-than-human world.

NOW THAT WE ARE SENDING YOU TO THE END   Blake Knecht 2025
Drifting between myth and disappearance, the desert of the American Southwest is record through decaying film emulsion, recording ecological collapse as we reflect on the potential end of human existence.

TUKTUIT (CARIBOU)   Lindsay McIntyre 2025
A poetic intervention depicting the processing of a caribou hide, the film is shot on 16mm made with caribou gelatin emulsion, existing as a reflection on the displacement of the Inuit community and place-based methodologies.

All films are either spoken or subtitled in English.

At the end of the evening there is panel discussion with Sustainable Darkroom co-director, artist and researcher Edd Carr, photographer and filmmaker Blake Knecht and environmental philosophist Elisa Aaltola. The discussion is held in English.

Yhteistyössä Luovan valokuvauksen keskus ry Luovake:n sekä ympäristöystävällisempiä käytäntöjä valo- ja videokuvauksen alalla edistävän The Sustainable Darkroom -yhteisön kanssa Kino Aurora järjestää ekologisiin teemoihin pureutuvan kokeellisen lyhytelokuvan illan.

Esitettävät elokuvat pureutuvat luonnon ja ekologisuuden teemoihin joko sisältönsä tai tekotapojensa puolesta - tai molempien. Tapahtuma esittelee teoksia, jotka laajentavat ekologisen elokuvantekemisen käsitettä radikaalilla ja ajatuksia herättävällä tavalla.

Tapahtumassa esitettävät teokset valikoituivat avoimen kilpailun kautta, johon saatiin yhteensä yli 600 (!) hakemusta ympäri maailman.
