Visiting the Dead
Elias Halabi | 2023 | 35min | Language: Arabic/English with English subtitles

The documentary by Elias Halabi follows Palestinian landowner's claims for land under the settler colonial regime, particularly the process of accessing and cultivating lands confiscated for Israeli settlements in the West Bank. It focuses on Palestinian landowners’ annual visits to their lands, now located behind the separation wall near Jabal Abu Ghneim (nowadays also known as the Har Homa settlement near Bethlehem). The document touches on several themes related to contemporary colonisation processes, ecological degradation, the slow erasure of native connection to the land, and the politics of future-making in Palestine by looking at them from the perspective of everyday embodiments. The documentary was conducted as part of the research material collection of the Academy of Finland-funded project ‘Present-futures in/of Palestine’ (2019-2023). The screening is accompanied by an introduction, commentaries from panellists, and open discussion on the topic.

About the panelists:

Wassim Ghantous
Wassim Ghantous is a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Space and Political Agency Research Group (SPARG), Tampere University. His research cuts across the disciplines of international relations and political geography, and focuses on questions of politics, coloniality, violence, surveillance, (in)security, and resistance, as they play out in the context of Palestine-Israel and beyond.

Mikko Joronen
Mikko Joronen is a Senior Researcher at Tampere Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS)/Regional Studies, Tampere University. His research is oriented around politics of vulnerability, tempos and temporalities of everyday violence, and geographical theory, especially at the intersection of ontology, politics and space. His publications deal with various related aspects, such as ungovernability, slow violence, waiting, and politics of speed; politics of future and the colonial (un)making of home; and the relationship of ontological vulnerability to various forms of power, governing and everyday resistance, especially in a context Palestine. He is currently working with questions of disruptive atmospheres, and material and affective politics of home in Palestine and beyond. He is the leader of the Palestine Research Group and PI of the ERC-funded research project ‘Dwelling with Crisis'. He holds academic docentship in political geography at University of Turku.
